The well is a small engine room
A Whaler Montauk, a Grady-White Fisherman, or an Everglades 243CC keeps the starting battery in the console or under a hatch. Spray, heat, and vibration share that space with electronics. BU-201a’s AGM notes — spill-proof, vibration, heat-sensitive — are why sealed starting batteries are common here. Flooded in a poorly vented console still has to meet the hydrogen vent rule in 33 CFR 183.420.
Measure, then talk CCA
The tray decides group 24, 27, or 31. MCA or CCA on the label has to meet the engine. Wikipedia’s cranking definitions are the tests. Hull length does not set either number. A photo of the open well with a tape on the case saves a wrong-size delivery.
Dual batteries are ordinary, not fancy
Electronics and a windlass want a second battery and a switch. House loads on the only starting battery are how a Saturday trip becomes a tow. We look at the switch and the posts in the same visit as the cells.
Jet-powered center consoles
Yamaha’s 190 FSH Sport is a center console with a jet driveline, not an outboard on the transom. The battery conversation is still a compact, hot compartment and a dual-battery setup on Yamaha’s public spec. Heat under a hatch is the failure, not a lake trolling string, unless the owner uses the trolling-motor mount.
Gulf visits
We come to the lift or trailer in Naples, Fort Myers, and Tampa. Salt on the posts is as likely as a tired cell. Bring the engine model if you know it.
Electronics that grew after the factory tray
A second screen, a radar, and a transducer that was not on the original Whaler still want current. If they share the starting battery, Saturday no-crank is the result. We look at the switch and whether a house battery already exists unused. Adding loads is ordinary; leaving them on the starter is the failure we keep seeing in Gulf consoles.
