AGM batteries and vibration

Absorbed glass mat batteries are spill-proof and handle vibration well. They are heat-sensitive and need an AGM charge profile.

What AGM is good at on a boat

Battery University BU-201a describes absorbed glass mat as a sealed lead-acid design: electrolyte in glass mats, spill-proof, mountable in ways a flooded box cannot, and better at vibration. Wikipedia’s VRLA article is the same family. That is why AGM starting batteries show up in pounding center consoles and in boxes that might see a wave. Hold-downs still matter; sealed does not mean the case can rattle.

Cycling and depth

BU-201a notes AGM can be discharged deeper than flooded — on the order of 80 percent versus 50 percent for flooded. That helps a dual-purpose or house AGM. It does not turn a starting AGM into a three-battery trolling bank. Starting AGM still has starting plates. Read the label for marine deep-cycle versus starting.

Heat is the trade

The same AGM article flags heat sensitivity. BU-806a’s 8°C life guideline is about sealed lead-acid. A gasketed Gulf console in August is that environment. AGM that cannot be rewatered will dry internally if the charger is too aggressive. Flooded with air and water can be the better hot-box choice on some hulls.

Charge profile

AGM wants AGM voltage, not flooded equalization. A multi-bank charger on a bass boat and a pedestal charger on a lift both have a setting. Wrong setting, short life. We read it.

Contender and Grady-White visits

Vibration plus salt plus a sealed starting battery is the usual Gulf AGM story. We measure the tray, check the charger, and pick AGM when the ride and the mounting ask for it — not because sealed sounds easier.

Hold-downs on a pounding hull

AGM still needs a clamp that meets the one-inch idea in 33 CFR 183.420. A sealed case that rattles will fail internally even though it cannot spill. We replace missing J-bolts with the battery on Contenders and Grady-Whites. Vibration resistance in the cells is not a substitute for a tray that holds the case.
