What the line is
Optima’s marine BlueTop batteries are spiral-wound absorbed glass mat (AGM) packs. They are sold as starting and dual-purpose batteries. That is a different job from a three-battery flooded trolling bank that runs a 36-volt bow motor all morning. The spiral cells are why these show up on fast saltwater boats that pound: the plates are held tightly, and the case does not spill acid if the boat takes a wave in the console.
Tray and terminals
A BlueTop group size is a physical envelope, not a promise that every flooded 27 or 31 will swap without measuring. Height under a console lid, hold-down style, and whether the model uses top posts, side posts, or both all change by SKU. Bring a photo of the open tray and the label on the battery already in it. We match the compartment, then the chemistry.
Charging
AGM wants an AGM charge profile. Battery University’s charging notes for sealed lead-acid still apply: a flooded-only onboard charger that finishes too high, or never finishes, will shorten life. If the boat already has a multi-bank charger, we read the program on that charger before we pick a replacement.
Lines we are asked about
Model names below are public line names used to identify batteries already on boats.
- BlueTop D31M — Group 31 dual-purpose marine AGM, often used where one battery must crank and cycle.
- BlueTop D34M — Smaller dual-purpose / starting marine AGM used in tighter trays.
- BlueTop D27M — Group 27 envelope marine AGM for boats that cannot fit a 31.
We replace marine batteries at the boat. See services and what changes a quote.
