Three jobs on one hull
A boat can carry three kinds of work even when every case is 12 volts. The engine needs a short, heavy current so the starter turns. Cabin lights, a fridge, and an inverter need hours of slower current. A bow-mount trolling motor needs a deep-cycle pack wired for 12, 24, or 36 volts and a morning on the water. Those are plate designs, not brand names. Wikipedia’s automotive-battery notes put cranking current and 20-hour amp-hours on different tests for a reason: one number does not describe the other job.
Why a starting battery fades on a trolling motor
Starting plates are thinner so they can dump current for a few seconds. Daily deep discharge into those plates sulfates them. Battery University’s capacity-loss article is blunt about leaving lead-acid at a low state of charge: sulfate hardens and capacity does not come back with a casual recharge. A trolling battery asked to crank a hot V6 the other way around can show a decent resting voltage and still fail to spin the outboard. Dual-purpose batteries exist for small skiffs with one tray. They are a compromise, not a fourth chemistry.
How we sort the batteries on the visit
A bank is a group of batteries wired together for one job — starting, house loads, or a trolling motor. We ask what each battery actually runs, how you charge — alternator, onboard charger, or a portable unit — and whether a switch already separates those groups. On a Ranger-style bass boat the bow string is the product. On a Sea Ray cruiser the house bank under a cabin step is the product. A dual-purpose group 27 in a jon boat can be honest if the owner accepts shorter trolling time. The quote follows the job, the tray, and the charger already on the boat.
Voltage is not the whole story
A 12-volt label only means six lead cells or four lithium-iron-phosphate cells in series. It does not tell you cranking amps, reserve minutes, or whether the pack is meant to sit at 50 percent every afternoon. Mixing a tired starter into a house bank overnight is how a boat that “had power at dusk” will not start at dawn. Keep the jobs split unless the hull truly has one box.
What to send before we come
A photo of each open tray, the motor voltage if there is a bow motor, and whether the boat lives on a lift, in a slip, or on a trailer. We come to you. The battery that failed is the starting point; the neighbor battery of the same age is part of the same conversation if they share a series string.
A quick way to talk at the boat
Point at each case and say what it runs. If you cannot, we will trace cables. Most quotes get simpler once the three jobs are named. A dual-purpose exception still has a name. Mystery batteries in a fourth tray are usually a stereo or a thruster — we will ask, and we will not assume they are trolling cells because they are group 31s.
