Two runtime ratings
North American labels often print reserve capacity. Battery University BU-105 defines RC as the minutes a battery can deliver 25 amperes. Amp-hours are capacity at a stated hour rate, commonly 20 hours on marine deep-cycle labels. Wikipedia’s automotive-battery article describes the 20-hour amp-hour test. A 100-minute RC pack and a 100 Ah pack are not the same object. We read the letters next to the number.
What house and trolling actually draw
A trolling motor at the bow is not a steady 25-amp lab load. Speed, weeds, and wind change the current. An inverter making coffee is a different shape again. RC and Ah still help you compare two deep-cycle batteries of the same chemistry. They do not size a lithium swap by themselves, and they do not tell you whether the charger can refill the bank before tomorrow’s launch.
Do not buy cranking with a runtime number
CCA and MCA describe a few seconds of starter current. Putting a high-RC house battery in as the only engine battery can leave you with voltage that looks fine at rest and still will not spin a hot four-stroke. The reverse — using a starting battery as a trolling pack because the Ah looked cheap — is how sulfate shows up by June on the Harris Chain.
Lithium labels use amp-hours differently
LiFePO4 modules advertise amp-hours at a different discharge curve than flooded lead. You can often use more of the rating, which is a depth-of-discharge conversation, not a reason to ignore the charger. Compare Ah inside one chemistry first. Then talk about weight and the BMS.
What we use on the visit
We look at the loads you actually run — bow motor voltage, fridge, inverter — and the RC or Ah already on the cases. Leesburg and Orlando lake boats usually fail from a trolling string that sat discharged, not from a missing CCA sticker. Bring the labels. We will not invent a runtime we did not measure.
How we use RC on a quote
If two flooded deep-cycles fit the same tray, the higher reserve minutes usually means more trolling time at a similar current. That is a comparison, not a guarantee of hours on your lake. Wind, weeds, and speed eat the rating. We still prefer a published RC or Ah over a marketing “long run” line with no test next to it.
