Banks and brains
A one-bank charger on a three-battery trolling string is not a three-bank charger. A three-bank charger with one chemistry setting cannot treat lithium bow and flooded start as equals. BU-403 is the lead-acid program family. BU-409b is why lithium cannot live on a lead float. Count the batteries, then count the profiles.
Lift and slip cords
The best charger on a dead GFCI is a brick. We test the outlet and the pigtail. Cape Coral thunderstorms trip pedestals weekly. A charger that reports “charged” while sitting unplugged is a UI lie you cannot see from the house.
Temperature and a closed box
Some chargers compensate voltage in heat. A unit that does not, on flooded cells in August, will gas hard. Hydrogen then has to leave the boat. The charger selection is also a venting selection when the well is sealed.
Portable vs bolted-on
Trailer bass boats often use a portable multi-bank unit that lives in the truck. Lift boats bolt a charger in the transom. Both are onboard in the sense that they travel with the system. Neither is optional if you deep-cycle every Saturday.
What we match
Chemistry, bank count, and whether the boat is lithium, flooded, or mixed. We will tell you when the charger has to change with the batteries. We will not leave a new LFP pack on a flooded-only brick.
What a good marine charger actually finishes
Absorption has to reach the chemistry window, then the unit has to drop to float for lead or stop for lithium. A charger that sits at a high voltage all night gasses flooded cells and cooks AGM. A charger that never leaves bulk never fills a trolling string. We read the manual page for that model when we can, and we watch the voltage on the posts when we cannot. The brick is part of the battery job.
