LiFePO4 lithium batteries on boats

Lithium iron phosphate is a four-cell 12-volt chemistry with a BMS, no conventional float, and a charger that must shut off at full charge.

Sailboats and small cruisers moored in a tree-lined harbor. Recreational sailboats and powerboats tied in marina slips.

What the chemistry actually is

A 12-volt LiFePO4 pack is four 3.2-volt cells. Wikipedia’s lithium-iron-phosphate article and Battery University BU-409b agree on the shape: nominal about 12.8 volts, max charge about 14.6 volts with an LFP charger, and no float. Follow the lithium maker’s charge profile on a charger that can run it — a leftover lead-acid program is not that profile. A battery management system is not optional; it is how the pack protects itself.

Drop-in is a tray claim

A module that fits a group 31 box is a size match. It is not a charger match, an alternator match, or a series-trolling match. Some makers allow series for 24- and 36-volt bow motors; some do not. We read that sheet. If the slip charger cannot be reprogrammed, the charger is part of the job. Calling the swap silent because the hold-downs lined up is how a pack gets floated to death.

Weight and house time

Lithium is lighter for the same usable energy, which matters on a bass-boat bow and on a sailboat that cares about trim. You can often use more of the amp-hour rating than flooded lead. Depth of discharge is still a choice: daily 80 percent is a different life than daily 30 percent. The BMS will disconnect if you empty the pack; that can look like a dead boat when it is a protection event.

Cold charge inhibit

Some modules refuse to charge near freezing. Florida inland winter mornings are usually above that, but a trailer in north-central storage can sit colder than the lake. Heated options exist on some lines. We confirm whether the module in front of us includes that feature rather than assuming Florida never gets there.

When we recommend staying lead

A flooded trolling string with a working three-bank charger, or a starting battery that only cranks, may not need lithium. The visit is to match the system. Cape Coral and Port Charlotte lift boats with house loads and a programmable charger are better lithium candidates than a skiff with a flooded-only portable charger.

What we still keep as lead

Many engines are happiest with a lead starting battery even when the house or trolling bank goes lithium. We do not force a lithium starter on an outboard that was never documented for it. The visit can be a mixed boat: LFP house, flooded start, a charger that can treat them as different jobs. That mix is ordinary. The mistake is one charger profile for both.
